Lucky Numbers in Chinese - 6 and 8

If you have ever come to China, you will notice a very interesting phenomenon: two numbers - 6 and 8 are so frequently used that they may appear in either phone numbers, or license numbers, or room numbers. People like their telephone numbers ending with 6 or 8. Business people especially like these numbers as well. In China, these numbers are extremely popular in Chinese culture.
So, why are the numbers - 6 and 8 instead of others? What do 6 and 8 mean in China?
Let's look at the shape of the numerals. The number 6 looks like a circle with a cover over it. In China, the circle is a symbol of wholeness and satisfaction, while a cover or a roof is a symbol of protection and safety. And also, we know that 6 has the similar pronunciation as to “liu2”, and in Chinese, there is a phrase called “六六大顺” which means “Everything goes as one wishes.“ That’s why people like the number 6 very much.
The number 8 also has a lucky shape and meaning. 8 is formed by two circles that flow into one another, making a fluid path that indicates good fortune. Then the pronunciation of 8 also has similar meaning to “fa1” which means in Chinese “to get rich”. They think that using the number 8 will bring good luck and wealth and believe the luck gained is worth the high price. In conversational Chinese, people may use “888” to mean “发发发 to get rich in a very short time.
